History & provenance

Mexico’s modern silver icon.

Introduced1982
Archive record2005

The 2005 issue is one chapter in the series. Banco de México introduced the modern silver Libertad in 1982, with production by the Casa de Moneda de México—the mint whose history reaches back to 1535. The coin contains stated weight and fineness but, unusually for sovereign bullion, carries no printed face value.

Winged Victory stands before Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl on the modern reverse, while Mexico’s national arms and historical eagle emblems connect the design to earlier coinage. Annual mintages can vary sharply, so date, size, and finish often matter as much to collectors as silver content.
