The cheapest silver is not the cheapest listing
Silver shopping pages make comparison look easy: scan the prices and pick the lowest. The problem is that the visible number can assume a large quantity, a payment method you are not using, or an order large enough to unlock free shipping. A useful deal survives the final checkout screen.

The number that matters
Start with the delivered total: merchandise, shipping, insurance, payment fees, and applicable tax, minus only discounts you can actually use. Divide that total by the fine troy ounces in the order. Now every candidate is expressed as dollars per fine ounce rather than marketing language.
Keep the exact product, quantity, and payment type constant. A one-coin card price cannot be compared honestly with a twenty-coin wire tier, even when both pages use the phrase ‘as low as.’
Premium needs a timestamp
Premium is the delivered amount above the order’s melt reference. Because silver spot and dealer inventory move, write down the spot price and time used for every quote. A percentage without a product, quantity, payment method, and timestamp is not a reusable comparison.
Ouncebound’s comparison tool lets you enter two to five checkout totals and ranks them by delivered cost, price per fine ounce, and premium over melt. The dealer values are yours; the tool does not present sample numbers as live offers.
Ask the resale question before buying
A low purchase premium can be offset by a weak resale bid. Ask a likely buyer what it would pay for the exact product today. The gap between the retail ask and realistic buyback bid is the immediate spread.
That spread will change, but it exposes whether the market recognizes the premium on both sides. Paying extra for a design you enjoy is reasonable when you name it as a collecting choice rather than assuming every dollar will return at resale.
The five-minute routine
Use the same routine for every purchase. It slows down an impulse without turning a hobby into a spreadsheet project.
- Confirm the exact weight, purity, product, and quantity.
- Capture the final checkout total for the payment method you will use.
- Compare delivered dollars and premium per fine ounce.
- Check seller terms, availability, and one realistic buyback bid.
- Record the invoice and spot reference after purchase.
